A. THE COUNTRY

The Republic of Cyprus is a European island country in the northeastern
Mediterranean Sea.  The country is divided as a result of Turkey’s 1984
invasion.  The south, the Republic of Cyprus (ROC), claims the whole
island and is internationally recognized as the legal government.  The
north, the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC), is only
recognized by Turkey.  Absence of unified data requires some separation
of information and statistics here.
GOVERNMENT: ROC – Presidential republic, EU membership and laws apply
to the whole island, but are suspended for the north.
           TRNC – Secular democratic government, assigned diplomatic
isolation since 1983.
ECONOMY: ROC – Rapid recovery after Turkey’s seizure of the north.
Light industry and tourism are important.  One-sixth of the world’s
merchant ships are registered in Cyprus.
        TRNC – Lower standard of living than the south with high
unemployment.  Heavily dependent on Turkish subsidies and trade.

A. THE PEOPLE

The population is ~880,000 with ~205,000 of those living in TRNC.
Official languages: ROC – Greek, Turkish, English widely used.
                   TRNC – Turkish.
Peoples – ROC – ~92% Cypriot, ~8% foreign.
         TRNC – ~98.6% Turkish Cypriot/Turkish, ~1.4% Other.

C. RELIGIONS AND CHRISTIANITY/PENTECOSTALISM

ROC – ~94.4% claim to be Christian, ~4.5% Non-religious, ~0.7% Muslim,
~0.4% claim Other religions.
TRNC – ~99% Muslim, ~0.4% claim to be Christian.
In the Christian category (whole island):
~66.31% are orthodox, ~3% Unaffiliated, ~1.59% Catholic, ~0.48%
Protestant, ~0.33% Anglican, ~0.28% Independent.
Evangelicals represent ~0.8% of the population.
Charismatics represent ~0.6% and of those ~0.2% are Pentecostals.
Cyprus is a major base for Christian organizations ministering to the
surrounding Middle Eastern states.
