A. THE COUNTRY

The Oriental Republic of Uruguay is located on the east bank of South
America, and has a democratic parliamentary government.  Uruguay has a
relatively high standard of living for Latin America, but with a costly,
extensive welfare system.  The poor are a growing segment of society,
even as the middle-class shrinks.  The economy has little industry and
is vulnerable to swings in the larger economies of neighbouring
Argentina and Brazil.  Generous water supplies and potential mineral
resources offer possible future growth.

B. THE PEOPLE

The population is ~3,373,000 and official language Spanish.
~90.6% are Latin American, ~8.7% European, ~0.7% Other (mostly Arab and
Asian).  Uruguayan society has been characterized by secularism.  They
have some of the highest rates of depression, suicide, abortion and
divorce in Latin America.

C. RELIGIONS AND CHRISTIANITY/PENTECOSTALISM

There is no legal preference given to any religion.  The largest
non-Catholic religious bodies are cults and sects of questionable
orthodoxy.  Growth of evangelicals, especially Pentecostal groups, has
rapidly increased.
~64.09% claim to be Christian, ~27.41% Non-religious, ~6.3%
Ethnoreligionist,~0.8% Jewish, ~0.6% Other, ~0.1% Muslim, ~0.1% Baha’i.
In the Christian category:
~54.86% are Catholic, ~4.7% Independent, ~3.68% Protestant, ~1.01%
Orthodox, ~0.04% Anglican.
Evangelicals represent ~6.2% of the population.
Charismatics represent ~5.9% and of those ~3.6% are Pentecostals.
Other groups originating in Western society represent ~3.81% of the
population.
