A. THE COUNTRY

The Republic of Malta is a southern European country consisting of three
islands in the central Mediterranean.  It is densely populated and
immigration (proximity to North Africa) presents a massive challenge.
Government is a parliamentary republic.  The economy is based on
tourism, light industry, shipping, I.T. and financial services.

B. THE PEOPLE

The population is ~410,000 and official languages Maltese and English.
Many Maltese have emigrated to other lands, such as Australia, Britain,
Italy and Canada in numbers that exceed the Maltese population.
~93% are Maltese, ~7% Other.

C. RELIGIONS AND CHRISTIANITY/PENTECOSTALISM

Catholic commitment tends to socially isolate other faiths.  ~96.82%
claim to be Christian, ~1.9% Non-religious, ~1.2% Muslim, ~0.08% Other.
In the Christian category:
~91.46% are Catholic, ~4.5% Unaffiliated, ~0.35% Protestant, ~0.24%
Anglican.
Evangelicals represent ~1.3% of the population.
Charismatics represent ~4.2% and of those ~0.1% are Pentecostals.
The majority of charismatics and even evangelicals are found within the
Catholic renewal movements in Malta.
‘Marginal’ groups originating in Western society represent ~0.3% of the
population.
