EQUATORIAL GUINEA
A. THE COUNTRY
The Republic of equatorial Guinea is a small enclave located in Central
Africa with several islands, including Bioko and Pegalu. Their weak
multiparty democratic government needs greater freedom for opposition
parties. Massive offshore oil revenues enriches a minority of foreign
investors and local elite, but the majority continue to live in poverty.
Corruption is a major problem.
B. THE PEOPLE
The population is ~700,000 and official language Spanish. ~77% are
Bantu, ~19.5% Other African, ~3.2% Others (Spanish).
C. RELIGIONS AND CHRISTIANITY/PENTECOSTALISM
Religious freedom is increasing. Beneath the surface of imposed
colonial Roman Catholicism lies the reality that animistic beliefs and
practices continue. ~90% claim to be Christian, ~3.9% Muslim, ~3.1%
Ethnoreligionist, ~2.6% Non-religious, ~0.4% Baha’i.
In the Christian category:
~80.33% are Catholic, ~3.96% Independent, ~3.35% Protestant, ~1.8%
Unaffiliated, ~0,6% are considered ‘marginal’.
Evangelicals represent ~4.4% of the population.
Charismatics represent ~6.3% and of those ~2% are Pentecostals.
