GABON
A. THE COUNTRY
The Gabonese Republic is a coastal Central African state on the equator,
with two-thirds being tropical rainforest. Government is a multiparty
democracy. Gabon is one of Africa’s wealthier countries, but the
majority are still involved with agricultural work and do not benefit
from most of the wealth. Gabon imports food and exports oil, wood and
minerals. There has been neglect of the nation’s infrastructure and
corruption is prevalent.
B. THE PEOPLE
The population is ~1,502,000 and official language is French.
~94.1% are Bantu (Central-Congo and Northwest groupings), ~5.2% Other
African, ~0.7% Other (European, Arab).
Women and children are vulnerable to poverty through lack of education
and social mores, and there is exploitation and trafficking of children.
C. RELIGIONS AND CHRISTIANITY/PENTECOSTALISM
Spiritist beliefs and practices deeply pervade Catholicism, other
Christian groups and Islam. Secret societies are common and Christians
who refuse to participate can be refused academic or professional
advancement. The president of the country is a Muslim.
~79.35% claim to be Christian, ~10.4% Muslim, ~7.76% Ethnoreligionist,
~2.4% Non-religious, ~0.09% Baha’i.
In the Christian category:
~40.63% are Catholic, ~17.55% Independent, ~15.67% Protestant, ~5.77%
Unaffiliated.
Evangelicals represent ~12.7% of the population.
Charismatics represent ~12.5% and of those ~6.7% are Pentecostals.
