SEYCHELLES
A. THE COUNTRY
The Republic of Seychelles is a group of 92 granite and coral islands in
the Indian Ocean, east of mainland Africa and northeast of the island of
Madagascar. The government is a multiparty democracy. Political
troubles and demonstrations plague the president. Tourism and fishing
are foundations of the economy. Seychelles is quite stable and wealthy
for an African country, but unsustainably high levels of public debt and
freeze on currency export undermines this.
B. THE PEOPLE
The population of ~85,000 is the smallest of any African state.
Official languages are French, English and Seselwa (a French Creole).
~94.7% are Creole, ~1.1% Asian, ~0.3% African, ~3.9% European.
C. RELIGIONS AND CHRISTIANITY/PENTECOSTALISM
~96.09% claim to be Christian (a voodoo-like African spiritism, based on
black magic and herbalism, permeates their lives), ~2.7% Non-religious,
~0.46% Hindu, ~0.32% Baha’i, ~0.22% Muslim, ~0.21% Buddhist.
In the Christian category:
~84.99% are Catholic, ~6.32% Anglican, ~3.31% Protestant, ~0.67%
Independent, ~0.11% Unaffiliated.
Evangelicals represent ~5.9% of the population.
Charismatics represent ~6.5% and of those ~1.2% are Pentecostals.
