BRUNEI
A. THE COUNTRY
The State of Brunie Darussalam is two small enclaves on the island of
Borneo. The Sultan rules as an absolute Muslim monarch, who appoints a
legislative council. One of the richest states in Asia, Brunei has free
education and health care, no income tax for most and heavily subsidized
housing, fuel and staple food. Hydrocarbons account for 90% of exports
but proven deposits could be exhausted as early as 2020. Disasters in
investment and a need for economic diversification have spurred
eco-tourism and a push for self-sufficiency in rice growing.
B. THE PEOPLE
The population is ~415,000 and official languages Malay and English.
~69.6% Malay, ~15.6% Chinese, ~14.8% Other (mostly immigrant workers).
C. RELIGIONS AND CHRISTIANITY/PENTECOSTALISM
Islam is the state religion. Despite constitutionally guaranteed
religious freedom, it is illegal to proselytize and illegal for a Muslim
to convert to another religion. No foreign Christian workers are
permitted. ~65.31% are Muslim, ~11.39% claim to be Christian, ~8.9%
Buddhist, ~6.6% Ethnoreligionist, ~5.3% Chinese, ~1.5% Non-religious,
~0.73% Hindu, ~0.24% Baha’i, ~0.03% Other.
In the Christian category:
~5.16% are Catholic, ~2.7% Independent, ~2.33% Protestant, ~1.01%
Anglican, ~0.08% Unaffiliated, ~0.06% are considered ‘marginal’.
Evangelicals represent ~6.1% of the population.
Charismatics represent ~3.4% and of those ~0.5% are Pentecostals.
