A. THE COUNTRY

Hong Kong, Special Administration Region of China, is one of the most densely populated areas in the world with over 7 million people.  The People’s Republic of China resumed control in 1997 but the Hong Kong Basic Law guarantees the existing legal, political and economic structures for 50 years.  Rapid growth through free markets, low taxes and non-interference by the state makes Hong Kong one of the world’s richest cities and largest economies.  There is a large gap between the richest elite and the poorest class.

B. THE PEOPLE

Chinese 95.2%: Cantonese 88.7% and other Chinese groups 6.5%.

Other 4.8%: Filipino 2.1%, Indonesian 1.49%, South Asian 0.6%, Caucasian

0.3%, Japanese 0.2%.

Official languages are Chinese and English.

C. RELIGIONS AND CHRISTIANITY/PENTECOSTALISM

Hong Kong Basic Law guaranties religious freedoms.

Chinese 59.57%, Non-religious 21.92%, Christian 12.41%, Other 3.8%,

Muslim 1.23%, Hindu 0.53%, Buddhist 0.4%, Sikh 0.13%, Jewish 0.01%.

The majority practice a mix of Buddhism, Daoism, Confucianism and Chinese folk religion.  Other faiths are largely practised by immigrant populations.

In the Christian category:

Protestant 5.6%, Catholic 4.54%, Independent 1.43%, Anglican 0.37%,

Orthodox <0.01%.

Other groups originating in Western society represent 0.47%.

Evangelicals are 6.1% of the population.

Charismatics are 1.7% (of those 0.8% are Pentecostals).
