DOMINICA
A. THE COUNTRY
The commonwealth of Dominica is a hurricane-prone, rugged, mountainous
island nation in the Caribbean Sea. The government is a parliamentary
democracy. Dominica is highly dependent on banana exports. Eco-tourism
in the beautiful interior is increasing, but limited infrastructure is a
challenge. Development of offshore finance makes Dominica a target for
money launderers.
B. THE PEOPLE
The population is ~66,500 and the official language English, but as many
as 80% speak French Creole. There is a high emigration rate to USA,
Canada and UK. There are more expatriate Dominicans than indigenous.
~94.9% are African Caribbean, ~3.6% Amerindian, ~15% Other.
C. RELIGIONS AND CHRISTIANITY/PENTECOSTALISM
~91.75% claim to be Christian, ~3.2% Non-religious, ~2.7%
Ethnoreligionist, ~1.75% Baha’i, ~0.2% each of Muslim, Hindu, Chinese.
In the Christian category:
~60.14% are Catholic, ~22.85% Protestant, ~5.11% Independent, ~2.5%
Unaffiliated, ~0.6% Anglican.
Evangelicals represent ~16.8% of the population.
Charismatics represent ~9.4% and of those ~5.9% are Pentecostals.
