A. THE COUNTRY

The Republic of Honduras is a mountainous Latin American country with
rain forests and fertile coastal plains on the Caribbean and Pacific
coasts.  The democratic civilian government face an uphill battle with
the corruption in government, preferential treatment of the rich
minority and endemic, lasting poverty affecting up to 80% of the
population.  Children in poverty are at risk, powerful gangs have
massive influence and power in Honduran society, and 60% of Central
American AIDS cases are found in Honduras.  Agriculture, services,
tourism and remittances account for most of the economic activity.  

B. THE PEOPLE

The population is ~7,616,00 and the official language Spanish.
~89% are Spanish-culture, ~79% Amerindians, ~3.1% Other
(Arab-Palestinian, Jamaican, others).
The indigenous people of the eastern rainforest have won significant
concessions to preserve their endangered habitat and culture.

C. RELIGIONS AND CHRISTIANITY/PENTECOSTALISM

The Roman Catholic Church is officially recognized, but there is
separation of Church and state with religious freedom.
~96.64% claim to be Christian, ~1.9% Non-religious, ~0.8%
Ethnoreligionist, ~0.45% Baha’i, ~0.18% Muslim, ~0.03% Buddhist.
In the Christian category:
~79.77% are Catholic, ~19.37% Protestant, ~5.98% Independent, ~0.11%
Anglican, ~0.07% Orthodox.
Evangelicals represent ~23% of the population.
Charismatics represent ~15% and of those ~14.2% are Pentecostals.
Other groups originating in Western society represent ~2.66% of the
population.
