NICARAGUA
A. THE COUNTRY
The Republic of Nicaragua is the largest and most sparsely populated
state of the Central American republics. The government is a
Presidential republic. Many minerals and fertile soil make the country
potentially wealthy, but it is poor and heavily dependent on remittances
from Nicaraguans working abroad. It has a mixed economy. Illegal
logging of rainforest hardwood is an increasing problem.
B. THE PEOPLE
The population is ~5,823,000 and official language Spanish. There are
English speaking communities on the east coast.
~84% are Latino, ~8.7% Afro-Nicaraguan, ~5.9% Amerindian, ~1.4% Other
(Middle Eastern, Chinese, Romani, European).
C. RELIGIONS AND CHRISTIANITY/PENTECOSTALISM
Nicaragua is a secular state. ~97.32% claim to be Christian, ~1.7%
Non-religious, ~0.8% Ethnoreligionist, ~0.06% Chinese, ~0.05% Baha’i,
~0.04% Buddhist, ~0.03% Muslim.
In the Christian category:
~69.39% are Catholic, ~21.25% Protestant, ~11.76% Independent, ~0.19%
Anglican.
Evangelicals represent ~29.8% of the population.
Charismatics represent ~29.5% and of those ~19.7% are Pentecostals.
Other groups originating in Western society represent ~1.39% of the
population.
