ST. LUCIA
A. THE COUNTRY
The State of Saint Lucia is one of the most beautiful islands in the
Caribbean. The government is a stable parliamentary democracy and
Constitutional monarchy (Elizabeth II). Tourism is important and
becoming more so. Agriculture, offshore finance and manufacturing make
St. Lucia one of the most diverse and stable economies in the Caribbean.
B. THE PEOPLE
The population is ~174,000 and the official language English, but 80%
speak French Creole. ~90% are African Caribbean, ~6% Mixed race, ~3.2%
South Asian, ~0.8% Euro-American. 86% of all children are born out of
wedlock and 45% if all households are led by women in this increasingly
materialistic society.
C. RELIGIONS AND CHRISTIANITY/PENTECOSTALISM
~95.08% claim to Christian, ~1.8% Ethnoreligionist, ~1.1% Non-religious,
~0.97% Hindu, ~0.5% Muslim, ~0.35% Other, ~0.2% Baha’i.
In the Christian category:
~55.77% are Catholic, ~20.85% Protestant, ~18.9% Unaffiliated, ~2.07%
Independent, ~1.87% Anglican, ~1.61% are considered ‘marginal’.
Evangelicals represent ~14.5% of the population.
Charismatics represent ~8.2% and of those 8.1% are Pentecostals.
