MONACO
A. THE COUNTRY
The Principality of Monaco is a sovereign city-state in southwestern
Europe on France’s south coast of the Mediterranean Sea. It is the
second smallest country in the world and the second smallest monarchy.
The prince shares his power with the National Council, which is elected.
The standard of living is high and wealthy foreigners make up the
majority of the population. Most revenue is from tourism but Monaco
also serves as a tax haven and gambling destination. Allegations
persist of suspicious fiscal activities in the country.
B. THE PEOPLE
The population is ~33,000 and official language French.
Monaco is culturally Catholic, but the real culture is one of
materialistic hedonism.
~28% are French, ~26.5% Monegasque, ~19% Italian, ~31.5% Many Others,
including French and Italian daily commuter workers.
C. RELIGIONS AND CHRISTIANITY/PENTECOSTALISM
Roman Catholicism is the state religion and proselytism is strongly
discouraged. Apart from the prevalent Catholic Church, there are three
congregations that serve the expatriate community and they impact little
of the whole society. There is a small group of Monegasque evangelical
believers. ~84.78% claim to be Christian, ~11.42% Non-religious, ~2.9%
Jewish, ~0.7% Muslim, ~0.2% Other.
In the Christian category:
~81.3% are Catholic, ~1.98% Protestant, ~0.87% Anglican, ~0.36%
Orthodox, ~0.27% Independent.
Evangelicals represent ~1.2% of the population.
Charismatics represent ~1.2% of the population.
