MONTENEGRO
A. THE COUNTRY
The Republic of Montenegro is a small coastal Adriatic state. It is
mountainous and picturesque and hosts Europe’s fastest growing tourist
industry. Adopting the Euro and making the economy investment friendly
has helped make it a highly developed country. The government is a
multiparty parliamentary democracy.
B. THE PEOPLE
The population is ~626,000 and the official language Ijekavian dialect
of Serbian. The narrow distinction between Montenegrins and Serbs and
the politicized element of ethnicity makes it difficult to ascertain
precise figures. ~92.8% are Slavic, ~5.6% Albanian, ~0.7% Romani, ~0.9%
Other (Central and Western Europeans, Arabs).
C. RELIGIONS AND CHRISTIANITY/PENTECOSTALISM
Historically, the Orthodox Church has had a strong influence. A feud
between the predominant Serbian Orthodox and the breakaway Montenegrin
Orthodox Church dominates the religious scene.
~77.05% claim to be Christian, ~15% Muslim, ~7.79% Non-religious, ~0.12%
Other, ~0.03% Buddhist, ~0.01% Jewish.
In the Christian category:
~71.62% are Orthodox, ~5.28% Catholic, ~0.1% Protestant.
Evangelicals represent <0.1% of the population.
Charismatics represent ~0.1% and of those <0.1% are Pentecostals.
