KUWAIT
A. THE COUNTRY
The State of Kuwait is an oil-rich wedge of desert at the northwest end
of the Arabian gulf, in Asia. It is a constitutional monarchy and
parliamentary democracy with the Sheikh and his family exercising
quasi-autocratic control. The country totally relies on the oil
industry and foreign labour. Kuwait is a key Western ally in the Middle
East.
B. THE PEOPLE
The population is ~3,051,000 and the official language Arabic.
The fluctuating expatriate community dramatically affects the size and
composition of the population
~61% are Arab (Kuwaiti, Foreign Arab, Bidoon), ~39% Others (South Asian,
Filipino, Iranian, Western, Chinese, others).
C. RELIGIONS AND CHRISTIANITY/PENTECOSTALISM
Sunni Islam is the state religion with a large Shi’a minority.
Religious tolerance in Kuwait is significantly higher than in most of
the region, based on the reality that foreigners comprise most of the
workforce. Immigrant religious minorities are permitted limited worship
facilities. Proselytizing Muslims is forbidden.
~81.64% are Muslims, ~13.79% claim to be Christian (mostly expatriates),
~33% Hindu, ~0.65% Buddhist, ~0.6% Non-religious, ~0.2% Baha’i.
In the Christian category:
~9.24% are Catholic, ~3.08% Orthodox, ~0.91% Protestant, ~0.42%
Independent, ~0.04% Anglican, ~0.1% Unaffiliated.
Evangelicals represent ~1.5% of the population.
Charismatics represent ~0.9% and of those ~0.2% are Pentecostals.
