       THE BAHAMAS

A. THE COUNTRY

The Commonwealth of the Bahamas is an archipelago of 700 coral islands
in the Atlantic Ocean between Florida and Cuba, forty of which are
occupied.  It is a Parliamentary democracy and Constitutional monarchy
(Queen Elizabeth II).  The Bahamas are heavily dependent on tourism (80%
from USA).  Banking is also important and the country functions as a tax
haven for many.  Materialism, stimulated mostly by tourism, deeply
affects all levels of society.

B. THE PEOPLE

The population is ~346,000 and the official language English.
~79% are African Caribbean, ~10.7% European, ~0.8% Other.  
There is a growing Haitian diaspora.

C. RELIGIONS AND CHRISTIANITY/PENTECOSTALISM

~94.65% claim to be Christian, ~3.5% Non-religious, ~1.05%
Ethnoreligionist, ~0.45% Baha’i, ~0.3% Jewish, ~0.05% Chinese.
In the Christian category:
~61.38% are Protestant, ~14.38% Catholic, ~13.68% Anglican, ~9.14%
Independent, ~2.14% Unaffiliated, ~1.87% are considered ‘marginal’,
~0.16% Orthodox.
Christian commitment is low and nominalism widespread, despite nearly
all Bahamians claiming to be Christian.
Evangelicals represent ~35.9% of the population.
Charismatics represent ~16.1% and of those ~13% are Pentecostals.
